Johnny Watson’s Performing Fox Terriers & Fred Spencer “Expressionist”

Amongst a small collection of old theatrical postcards Reynard Collectables has just listed on ebay, this one I think deserves special mention.

Although not great image quality, the picture shows a troop of performing dogs, most on two legs, behind a small cart carrying a coffin! There is a dog sitting on the coffin with a wreath in its mouth, so maybe one of the troop has died (how sad!).

Printed to the back of the card are details of Watson’s Fox Terriers (Everybody’s Favourite) who it seems have become a “Howling” success everywhere. They are presented by Johnny Watson (born Newcastle on Tyne Feb 7th 1844), whose recipe for long life is also printed on the reverse.

A little gem I think, and probably from the first decade of the 20thC? Does anybody have any information on Johnny and his Terriers? Also I have another card of Fred Spencer “Expressionist” and would be interested in any information on what an “Expressionist” would be doing?

These and similar items are for sale in Reynard Collectables delcampe store.
