Monsanto House of the Future – Disneyland 1958

An interesting brochure and leaflet just listed in my ebay store gives an insight into somebody’s vision of the future from 1958.

Looking like a large plastic pod and built by the Monsanto Chemical Company, in cooperation with architects Hamilton & Goody (plus the Dept. of Civil Engineering at M.I.T.) this futuristic house was installed in Disneyland at Anaheim, California in 1957.

Based around a central kitchen there are four “wings” containing living and bedrooms, with many modern plastic items of furniture and modules. Fascinating colour pictures of the various rooms (I love the one of the “mother”sitting at her desk using the videophone with behind her a view of the Sleeping Beauty Castle!).

The actual house was removed in 1967 I believe, and took two weeks to demolish rather than the one day envisaged. Apparently this was due to the wrecking ball bouncing off the strong plastic outer walls!

There is also a small Monsanto leaflet which includes a small plan view of the house layout. All available in Reynard Collectables ebay shop here.
