Not my normal subject matter but while in Northumberland to visit my wife’s family we took in a concert (a bit grand for this gig maybe?) by the Northumberland folk band The Unthanks. I had heard the songs before when my wife had played them while in her office or in the kitchen, but had always labelled it “Music for (or by) Manic Depressives”, but just went along out of interest. Have to say I enjoyed the experience, although whether you can really say you enjoyed songs about dead friends, slave labour down the pits etc. is a moot point?
Surreal experience just trying to find the venue which was at High House Farm Brewery, Matfen, Northumberland and the Brewery itself is worth a visit (be warned it isn’t signposted from the north and almost impossible to find so take spare water and supplies). The concert was in a marquee in the farmyard and as the concert title said it made for an “Intimate Evening with The Unthanks”. Beautiful voices the two lead singers (Rachel and Becky Unthank) but even they admit the songs are pretty bleak, so maybe don’t go along if you need cheering up. Good support duo also (Johnny Kearney & Lucy Farrell, and she has got a fantastic voice!) so highly recommend finding a venue on this tour that still has some tickets available.
That is my first and almost certainly last music review/promo!!
