While I am on the subject of maps (see previous blog post about Caledonian Railway Scotland map), one of my favourite collecting areas, I thought I would share a few images of a map that came in a lot I have just purchased.
It dates from around 1856 and is from official documents on the Crimean War and is drawn and engraved (steel engraving I believe) by J Rapkin. Despite a couple of areas of damage near the folds, but which only affect fairly empty areas, it is a nicely detailed and hand coloured map showing the various troop positions during phases of the Siege of Sebastopol. Includes detail on such battles as Inkerman and Balaklava.
A lovely if fairly fragile item and available in Reynard Collectables ebay shop here.
