Often to be found in neglected boxes at general sales or auctions are older “Society” magazines such as Piccadilly, Queen, Sphere etc. While a lot of the articles and old stories seem fairly dry and dated these days, the magazines do hold a lot of useful information if your interest is period fashions, motoring or design.
Just look at the the adverts, usually placed in the early or late pages. As well as having superb graphics in their own right (often by well known artists and illustrators of the time), they can also give some great ideas if you are looking for a new style, or trying to recreate a period look either in home or fashion.
The other look I love is in the motoring adverts in which some of the fine old names such as Daimler, Lagonda and Alvis come up with really stylish designs both for the advert and the car!
I have included a few of the late 1920s fashion pages below to give an idea of what I’m talking about. I am selling some in my ebay shop here, but they are limited in number as I don’t like to cut up magazines still in good condition!
